Tucked among low-rise businesses in the North San Rafael Commercial Center, Red Whale Coffee isn’t where you’d expect to find a sleek, high-tech coffee bar with a modular brewing system. But owner Sean Boyd fruitfully brought the location to life with ambition and a deep love of coffee.
The atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious, more reminiscent of a cozy ski-town café. Rock and roll memorabilia and Red Whale Coffee swag add character to the three-room space, while the back lounge—featuring red couches and a vintage pinball machine—offers a laid-back spot to unwind and enjoy a bold, third-wave cup of coffee or their signature cold brew, “Krypton Ice.”
Red Whale also pours coffee from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sunday Marin Farmers Market at the Marin County Civic Center.
